What are the Best Modern Farmhouse Colors?

Generally speaking, you’ll see a lot of white in the modern farmhouse.

But if you love the farmhouse style, yet prefer a little more color in your life, you’re not doomed!

The best modern farmhouse colors are muted and neutral. They’re not too bright, except for the occasional accent, and they work well in nearly any space. You’ll see a lot of earth tones in this style: soft whites, greens, blues, and greiges.

In addition to earthy toned paints, you’ll often see barnwood, subway tile, and shiplap on the walls. Older, timeless pieces that hold a lot of character are also common.

*Quick note on Light Reflectance Value: LRV runs on a scale of 0% to 100%, and 50% would be a mid-value paint color. The higher the LRV, the more light a color reflects back into the room.

1. High Reflective White SW 7757

LRV: 93

This is the whitest white in Sherwin Williams’ collection. It’s a great choice for cabinets, trim, doors — and even walls.

While High Reflective White leans slightly warmer, it pairs well with cooler colors. It does tend to pick up on the colors around it. This means it could look a little too stark against a wall or floor that is a really warm hue with golden undertones.

2. Alabaster SW 7008

LRV: 82

Alabaster is a softer white with light cream/pale green undertones. It’s a great choice for shiplap walls (which are popular in farmhouse style interiors). It typically works best with other colors that have warm undertones.

It looks beautiful in both North and South facing rooms. Keep in mind that it will look even warmer in South or West-facing evening light.

3. Mindful Gray SW 7016

LRV: 48

Mindful Gray by Sherwin Williams is a neutral greige. It’s not too light or too dark, but a nice, mid-tone hue that’s incredibly versatile and could work in almost any room.

4. Agreeable Gray SW 7029

LRV: 60

Agreeable Gray is a soft, light greige that tends to lean more toward the gray end of the spectrum. It has a very slightly green undertone, but can look more blue-gray in north facing rooms. It would make a beautiful wall color in the modern farmhouse!

5. Sea Salt SW 6204

LRV: 64

Moving right along to the more “colorful” hues… A chameleon color, Sea Salt is a popular soft, muted green with green-gray undertones. It would look beautiful in your farmhouse paint color palette. Being so versatile, it goes well with whites, grays, beiges, and greiges.

6. Rainwashed SW 6211

LRV: 59

Rainwashed is similar to Sea Salt in that it’s a soft, muted green paint color. However, it has blue-green undertones rather than green-gray, so it leans slightly cooler. They are both beautiful paint color choices for a modern farmhouse.

7. Hinting Blue SW 6519

LRV: 68.79

Looking for a light blue that’s not going to look too bright in natural lighting? Like the two greens above, Hinting Blue is also a soft, muted paint color. And it also looks beautiful on the walls of a modern farmhouse.

8. Waterloo SW 9141

LRV: 12.97

Want a darker color that won’t look too bold amongst your farmhouse decor? Check out Sherwin Williams Waterloo! This is a medium-dark teal color with grayish undertones, which keep it from looking too bright in natural sunlight.

How to Choose the Best Sherwin Williams Farmhouse Paint Colors

Now, I’m going to share a few tips for choosing the perfect Sherwin Williams farmhouse paint colors. And honestly? These tips will come in handy no matter which paint brand you choose. No matter your decorating style, you’ll want to take these things into consideration.

Sample Before Committing

Sample, sample, sample. This is the best way to save yourself time and money — and to choose a wall color that you won’t regret.

Most paint stores offer small cans of sample paint. Some even offer large stick-on samples that you can put right up on your wall. Samplize stickers give you a real-life representation of various paint colors.

Then put them up on every wall that you plan on painting multiple times a day. This will help you see how they look from all angles and in all different types of light.

Understand Color Schemes

There are six different types of color schemes, and they’re all based on where the hues reside on the color wheel.

The color wheel is made up of twelve basic hues:

  • Primary – red, yellow, blue
  • Secondary – orange, green, purple
  • Tertiary – red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-purple, red-purple

You can read more about color schemes in this article about how to choose a color palette for any room.

Let Your Personality Shine

At the risk of sounding like Captain Obvious, let me share with you one final tip for choosing the perfect color palette for your home:

When it comes down to it, it’s all about what makes YOU feel good. Let your personality shine by choosing paint colors you love rather than following the “rules”. And that, my friends, is one of my best tips for choosing the perfect paint colors for your home.

Modern Farmhouse Trim & Ceiling Colors

Are you planning on painting the trim, ceiling, cabinets, and/or doors white? Then you’ll want to consider using the same white trim color in all of these areas. You could even use it on any walls that you plan on painting white.

Keep in mind that, if your home has multiple levels, you could absolutely use two different whites. Just use one white paint color throughout each level.

But remember: You DO NOT have to paint everything white, even in a modern farmhouse. You could paint the kitchen cabinets navy or green, or you could even paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.

Final Thoughts

Even though Fixer Upper has since ended, the farmhouse style continues to be popular. People seem to love this classic style and its neutral hues!

If the walls in your home need a refresh, then a fresh coat of paint will make a huge difference. Today, I shared some of the best Sherwin Williams farmhouse paint colors, along with a coordinating whole house color palette.

So….which modern farmhouse paint colors will you choose??

  1. I sure wish that the paint stores would offer a brochure of paint colors for each type of house example: modern farmhouse etc that would make it easy to be able to see all colors on same page and in different rooms of the house

    1. Yes, that would be awesome!! It seems like I remember Sherwin Williams offering something like that at one point, but that would have been years ago. :/
