Choose the Perfect Color
For the living room, consider pairing crisp white walls with warm wood accents. But don’t be afraid to add a little color, too! Muted shades – like beige, sage green, and soft blue – are foolproof choices for the modern farmhouse.
Do you crave a cohesive paint color palette that flows throughout the whole house? If so, I have great news for you!
My professionally-curated paint palette includes 12 modern farmhouse colors from Sherwin Williams. It includes a range of neutral paint colors, along with some muted blues and greens. I even threw in a few darker colors for those of you who walk on the bold side!
With the color palette, you’ll receive 7 color combination ideas, trim colors, and room suggestions. You can find it here in my shop (or click on the image below).

Incorporate Comfortable Furniture
Again, comfort is key in the modern farmhouse living room. Opt for oversized linen sofas and armchairs in neutral tones. Complete the look with accent pillows and throws in soft, muted hues.
Add in some complimentary wood tones – like a reclaimed coffee table – for added interest.
Add Cozy Textures
While the modern farmhouse boasts sleek minimalism, it’s also about feeling “at home”. So you’ll want to bring in some cozy textures to keep your living room from feeling too cold and sterile.
You can incorporate interesting textures in the form of jute rugs, for example. Or in leather armchairs, woven throw pillows, and chunky knitted blankets.
Make sure to keep most of the colors within your chosen neutral-ish palette. Add in a little strategically-placed color, though, to keep it from getting boring.
Embrace Farmhouse-Inspired Decor
You’ve likely seen prints of the infamous Highland cow in farmhouse-inspired homes. (And we can’t forget the old style pickup truck!) But I promise you’re not limited to the same old thing everyone’s doing.
Consider going thrifting to see what kind of treasures you’ll find. Or shop your own home to create a gallery wall of family photos. Then choose a neutral color and spray paint your picture frames so they match (even if the sizes and styles vary).
Of course, you can add in some farmhouse-style lanterns, wooden trays, and weathered signs. DIY mason jar vases, too. But then…throw in some geometric patterns or metallic accents, as well, for a little contrast.
Choose Farmhouse-Style Lighting
Black metal chandeliers are often the lighting of choice for the modern farmhouse. Use Edison bulbs to further enhance the farmhouse vibe. For a little extra reading light, you could opt for a rustic table lamp or two.
Avoid overdoing the lighting in the modern farmhouse living room, though. After all, you want it to feel warm and cozy – not too bright and cold.

Highlight Architectural Features
To be honest, it’s VERY easy for the modern farmhouse to feel, well, stale. This is where a little architectural interest can go a loooong way. We’re talking brick fireplaces, exposed beams, and shiplap walls here – nothing too crazy.
Is your house lacking all these features? No worries! Install some faux beams or peel-and-stick shiplap wallpaper, and voilà…instant farmhouse vibes.
Incorporate Greenery
Potted plants and fresh flowers can bring life to any space. Painted mason jars make great vases, while galvanized metal buckets work well for potted plants.
Don’t have a green thumb? It’s fine! There are plenty of realistic faux plants on the market today, so you have no excuses not to “bring in the green.”
Not even if you – like I – have cats that will chew on anything (even fake plants). Get yourself some macrame hangers to keep them out of reach, and they’ll be fine.
Final Thoughts
And there we have it! Cozy meets contemporary in your modern farmhouse living room. So, which ideas will you incorporate into your own home?
