Decorating With Succulents Indoors

Love the idea of decorating your home with succulents, but not entirely sure how to do that? While the possibilities are limitless, here are a few ideas for decorating with succulents indoors. (Be sure to consider drainage when choosing your container, though.)

decorative succulent pots

– upcycled containers (ceramic coffee mug, teacup, bowl, etc.)

– found objects from nature (driftwood, large seashell, etc.)

– tall glass vase or small votive

You can do all kinds of fun things with them, like in the office space below, where the succulent planter is displayed on a couple of books.

A few considerations when choosing a container for your succulents:

  • Size is important; it should be 10% wider and 10% deeper than the plant.
  • You’ll need to ensure proper drainage and avoid retaining water, so some of the above container ideas may not be ideal.
  • A huge pot with too much soil can actually make it harder for succulents to grow.

Many of the listed succulent subscription boxes come with everything you need, including pots — although with some, you might have to (or want to) replant your succulent into a container of your choosing.

Either way, you will typically receive instructions for doing so, as well as care instructions, with each box.

How Do You Take Care of Small Succulents?

As I mentioned in the previous section, succulents need to be in a container that has proper drainage.

So, if you choose to upcycle something you’ve found, see if there’s a way you can make a small hole in the bottom. Otherwise, you’ll need to learn how to water succulents in pots without any drainage.

Succulents prefer the “soak and dry” watering system. So, rather than misting them with a spray bottle, you’ll want to pour the water over the soil, and then allow it to completely dry before watering again.

If you’re interested in seeing how it’s done, the video below explains this system in more detail (it also covers containers without drainage holes).
